CHALLENGE
Sensis required an enclosure design for its next generation of remote sensing units that satisfied both the EMC and NEMA 4/12 requirements.
The enclosure that the remote unit line replaceable units (LRUs) are installed within was required to be NEMA 4/12 compliant and provide electromagnetic (EMC) shielding against radiated and conducted emissions emanating from within the enclosure. Furthermore, the medical enclosure needed to assist with thermal cooling of all of the internal components to prevent overheating of the LRUs.
“It was critical that the sensing units be carefully and precisely engineered–air traffic control monitoring allows no room for error” stated Robert Gardiner, Hardware Engineering Supervisor of Sensis. “The product is used world-wide in sensitive environments and various climate zones, requiring a very dependable product.”
SOLUTION
MPE design engineers and Sensis hardware engineers worked closely to create an enclosure that functioned seamlessly with the remote sensing units and met strict industry standards. MPE also installed rails to provide heat transfer from the LRUs to the ambient air surrounding the enclosure, going beyond what was required.
RESULTS
MPE created a dependable, versatile medical enclosure that will be used for Sensis systems, worldwide.
“MPE met and exceeded our expectations in every way. Their tooling and manufacturing capabilities surpassed what we’ve experienced with other vendors” noted Gardiner. “They helped create a superior product from the valuable input in manufacturability and quality inspection tooling processes they provided. Their team of experts even identified a necessary adjustment for improved flange uniformity–changing the 0º flange angle to a -15º flange angle.”

ECG Workstation Cart Case Study
CHALLENGEA well-known cardiology medicial client desired to redesign its existing ECG workstation cart in order to deliver an even better experience for the end user. The updated medical cart would reflect customer requirements and provide a scaleable platform for other products in the line - all while meeting extremely tight production deadlines.
SOLUTIONIncorporating voice of the customer (VOC) feedback, MPE acted fast to develop a new workstation design that placed the ECG system, ancillary components and supplies within easier reach of the user.
RESULTSMPE worked quickly and effectively with the client to develop the ultimate in user friendly ECG carts. Following approval of the design, MPE developed three functional prototypes within six weeks to display at a critical trade show. Four months later, MPE shipped 1,000 production units – fully assembled and ready to operate – to meet the client’s aggressive timeline.

RETCAM 3 Ophthalmic Medical Cart Case Study
CHALLENGE
Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. wanted to redesign its existing ophthalmic medical cart to upgrade the aesthetic appeal and create a lighter, more maneuverable package.
“The original medical cart already achieved success, but we wanted to offer even more” noted Bill Shea, Vice President of R&D at Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. “We desired a more user-friendly product reflecting its advanced technology software.” The company also wanted to highlight its intended use in a NICU environment. The new design would allow for ease of manufacturability, ergonomic design input and improved shipment – all at a lower price point.
SOLUTION
The company collaborated with MPE to create the next generation flagship NICU ophthalmic imaging medical device – a modern medical cart with smooth lines and soft colors. The new RetCam 3 Ophthalmic Medical Cart addresses many ergonomic and usability requirements, including a large work surface, pull-out keyboard, built-in front pocket for the foot switch, integrated cord wraps, improved mobility, and a multi-axis articulating support for the significantly larger flat-panel display. In addition, the ophthalmic cart was designed to match the “sister” Clarity RetCam device, thus broadening Clarity’s branding requirements.
RESULTS
MPE provided a full solution design that has made manufacturing and shipping more efficient for Clarity Medical Systems. The desired product requirements – size, cost, manufacturability, Industrial design, ergonomics – were successfully met and exceeded. Customer feedback has been extremely positive – NICU physicians and nurses praise the RetCam 3 for its mobility and ease of use, as well as the adaptable, updated design that visually fits in with other facility equipment. “We are extremely pleased with MPE’s willingness and ability to adapt to project and product demands” says Shea. “This, coupled with their openness on costs, process, documents, and the final product provided for a very positive experience.”
